Jenever
About the category
Jenever is a distilled drink based on grain, in which traditionally malt wine and juniper play a major role. The name 'jenever' is the old Dutch term for jenever. At Stokerij Soestdijk, we exclusively use malt wine as the base for our grain jenever.
Jenever has a protected geographical indication (PGI) – jenever may only be distilled in the Netherlands, Belgium, northern France, and parts of north-west Germany.
Malt wine is a distilled alcoholic drink made by fermenting and distilling a mash of malted grains, such as rye, wheat, barley, or corn. It is an essential component of traditional distilled beverages such as genever, whisky, and some liqueurs.
Young genever has gained popularity with the advent of column distillation, which allowed for the quick and inexpensive production of neutral alcohol. Young genever contains less than 15% malt wine and can be sweetened with up to 10 grams of sugar per litre. Zoesdijck genever is not sweetened and is not young genever.
Contains more malt wine than young genever, at least 15%, and can be sweetened with 20 grams of sugar.
